SWORN to PROTECT
(Sugarland Blue, Book 1)

Released: May 7, 2013

Sugarland loves their men in blue, especially Detective Shane Ford. But Shane’s mission to protect and to serve has just gotten personal....

Detective Shane Ford, Sugarland’s favorite cop, has been blindsided by the sudden death of his best friend, NFL star Brad Cooper, and by becoming the legal guardian of Brad’s son, Drew—a bitter, angry sixteen-year-old with a dangerous secret. Shane is determined to pry the truth from Drew, but he manages only to alienate him—and winds up going head-to-head with Juvenile Officer Daisy Callahan, whose job is to protect the teen’s best interests.

Shane has always been drawn to Daisy’s beauty and strength, but he’s determined not to allow their intense attraction to interfere with his duty ever again. It’s a vow that will prove difficult to keep, as the realities of Shane and Daisy’s blossoming love and their growing bond with the grieving teen propel Shane headlong into danger for the new family he has sworn to protect.

Q&A with Jo Davis

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a multi-published author who currently writes under 2 pen names. I’m a mother of 2 awesome almost-grown kids, and I just bought a new home that we’re having fun decorating.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I don’t know that it’s interesting, but I’m constantly running dialogue in my head, ALL the time. I was in my 30’s before I realized I was the only one I knew who did this. Then I finally found my local romance writer’s chapter and discovered people like me! What a relief. I’m “normal” after all! LoL.

LOL, yes normal is good!

Why did you choose to create romance books?

Because I absolutely MUST have a happy ending. Too much of real life doesn’t, and I want to provide myself and my readers with an escape that takes them away from their troubles for a while.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I have several mentors, including my critique partners and dear friends Tracy Garrett and Suzanne Ferrell. Another great mentor and dear friend is Lorraine Heath. They all are always ready with an ear and super-sane advice when I need it! Which is often.

What book are you reading now?

Right now I’m on heavy deadline and I’m not reading much. But I am anxiously awaiting the 3rd installment of the CAPTIVE PRINCE series by S. U. Pacat. Brilliant alternative historical, sweeping romance that is everything a book/series should be—breathtaking, gut-wrenching, and sigh-worthy.

Who designed the covers?

If you mean the covers of my books, the NAL art department designs them and they do a fabulous job! I heart my covers!

Yes, I agree. They are wonderful!

Do you have any advice for other writers?

If you want to sell to a major New York house and/or get an agent, learn the business and your craft. Then keep submitting and don’t give up! You’re going to hear many “no’s” before you get that one “yes” that will change your life. If you want to self-publish, learn the business and hone your writing craft before you put your work out for public consumption. Coca-Cola began life as a cough syrup, if you know what I mean. The Cola-Cola company does NOT sell cough syrup. Whether you’re new or you’ve written 100 books, your work can be improved. Know that and make it the best it can be. I recently wrote an article about this subject on the Writerspace blog called “Self-Publishing: Learn Before You Leap”. Look it up and get some good advice.

Do you have a day job as well?

No, I don’t. I was a public school teacher for 16 years, and I quit teaching in 2005 to write full-time. I’m fortunate that I’m able to make a living doing what I love!

What is your most embarrassing childhood moment?

On the very 1st day of 1st grade, I ran out of the school building toward where my mom sat in the car pool line to pick me up, excited to tell her about my day. Halfway to the car, my skirt fell down in front of EVERYONE! All the moms, teachers, and other kids were laughing at me. I went home crying and I’ll never forget it until the day I die.

Oh, no! Yes I would say that is unforgettable! L I hope things went better after that though.

What is your favorite song? Why?

One of my favorite songs and videos is “Better Than I Know Myself” by Adam Lambert. His struggle with losing the person who’s the other half of himself, the person he can’t breathe without, really speaks to me and is something I can relate to. Gorgeous video, too.

Coffee, Tea or Soda? Flavor?

Caffeine Free Coke—with rum and a lime wedge. J

Tent or Hotel?

Hotel—my idea of roughin’ it is a slow bellboy.

If you could be any Paranormal creature, what would you be?

A sorcerer/shifter like my hero Kalen Black in BLACK MOON, written as J.D. Tyler. I know a couple of people who need to be turned into toads, and I would poof myself a sexy body!

Hehe, don’t we all!

Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Yes—thank you for making my job the best, most enjoyable one in the world. I love nothing more than to sit and give life to the mania going on in my brain, and I’m happy you’re along for the ride. Happy Reading!

Thank you for having me here today!
